The integration of a children’s hospital in a park was fundamental to the siting of the building, the distribution of departments, orientation and sculpting of the site. This enables distant views in every direction, just as there are gardens in every direction.
NDYLIGHT was engaged as part of the NDY project team for the new $1 billion hospital delivered as a PPP under the State Government’s Partnerships Victoria model, and one of the largest hospital projects undertaken in Australia.
Our team was involved in the conceptual design of the lighting throughout the project as part of the bid phase, and then played a key part in the design and development of that concept throughout all the public and patient areas of the hospital, including the inpatient unit rooms and corridor spaces, operating theatres and consultation suites.
NDYLIGHT then worked through the key public front-of-house areas to provide a lighting language and identity to the project, linking the lighting to the architectural forms and providing smaller scale luminous forms to bring otherwise large physical spaces down to a more childlike level.
Our designers also developed external lighting solutions to meet both the Green Star requirements of the building, the security camera conditions and the general aesthetic intent of the landscape and architectural form.
It is Australia’s first 5 Star Green Star hospital, delivering a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas through the use of energy efficient lighting, cooling and heating.
